In most areas of fishing, BNF lives to experiment and push boundaries with new types of tackle, different techniques, and stepping ‘outside the box’ methods for hunting down big fish. One area that you’d think BNF would be most flexible on is color. You’d Think. However, BNF has had so much success with two basic colors: black, and green pumpkin with black flake, when using soft plastics for so long that BNF rarely gives any ‘different from the norm’ colors enough time in the water to see if they will catch fish before going back to tried and true black or green pumpkin black flake.
Stepping outside the box with Keitech’s Model III SwimJig and Fat Swing Impact 4.8 in Bluegill Flash
BNF first realized the folly of that line of thinking last season when using the Keitech SwimJig system. One day, there was no black Model III Swim Jig or black Fat Swing Impact 4.8. to throw. So, I went to the Bluegill Flash color with great trepidation, and crazily enough, it proved to be on the whole more successful than the black had ever been.
It’s not black, it’s not green pumpkin, it’s Moaner Hook’s The Predator Jig in Pecado! And it works.
Fast forward to this spring. New season, new baits, yep, new colors. Stepping out of the box yet again with Moaner Hook’s Pecado color, BNF proceeds to collect more donkeys and start’s to get the idea that trying new colors might not be such a bad idea.

Enter Cajun Tackle House, purveyor of fine Louisiana influenced tackle. You might recall that BNF did a little rundown of their absolutely beastly Skull Dragger Flipping Hook ( Review Here). Heavily influenced by the bass habitat down in Louisiana (think gnarly, then add 10 starving pit bulls and a few cranky gators), the colors they use aren’t found at your local Bass Pro Shop or Cabelas, and are born deep in the bayous and oxbows of the Delta.
Above, the Spring Perch color has pale tones, not at all like any perch colors I’ve seen before.
CTH’s Cajun Steamer Heavy Cover Jig in Grasshopper. This color is bright and vibrant, and contrasts well with.. you guessed it.. a green pumpkin and black flake Rage Craw trailer.
CTH’s Grasshopper color is brighter, but still pretty natural looking, and blends well with the emerging aquatic vegetation here in Pennsylvania.

A Nockamixon 3lb chunk likes that Cajun flavour! This chunker hammered this CTH 3/8 oz Cajun Steamer Heavy Cover Jig in Honey Badger tipped with a Net Baits Baby Paca Craw in Watermelon Candy.
A few quick words on the Cajun Steamer Heavy Cover Jig from Cajun Tackle House. (A full review will be forthcoming as BNF gets more time on the water with it) The jig was fished in heavy weeds and around laydowns. It was fairly weedless, and came through the weeds and wood without much effort. I did get snagged in some gnarly wood and ended up breaking 17lb fluorocarbon rather than bending the hook on the jig. That’s a pretty strong hook on that jig! It’s hard to tell from the pictures of the Cajun Steamer above, but they seem to have a different hook angle than other heavy cover jigs BNF has used, and that translated into positive hookups on every bite.

As you can see in the above picture, the hook angle gives the point plenty of bite, and this hookset went right through the hard part of the cheek with no problem.
In the BNF zone, if you close your mind and stay static, chances are that you will be missing out on a whole ton of great experiences. Cajun Tackle House has really made overcoming BNF’s color phobias a lot easier, and a lot more fun.
